WHO I AM

Bio for Richard C. “Dick” Felton

Early Life and Education

I am a lifelong resident of Sarnia. I was born and raised on a market garden farm on Blackwell Road, where I learned the value of hard work at an early age.

I attended Clarke Road and Cathcart Boulevard public schools, then Northern High School, followed by SCI&TS. I also completed Grade 13 technical studies at Central, followed by 11 years of night school in technical training.

Industrial Career and Business Leadership

My industrial career included work with Fiberglas, Sarnia Heating & Electric, Shell Oil, Dow Chemical, and Huron Stream Specialties. At Dow Chemical, I served as a Lead Journeyman Instrument Mechanic.

In 1974, I started Sarnia Piping Specialties Ltd. My son Richard bought the company in the early 2000s, and today my grandson Spencer owns and operates the business, now known as SPS Sales. The company has been in business for more than 50 years. Over the course of my career, I have also started, operated, sold, and closed several other businesses.

Community Service and Coaching

Throughout my working life, I have been committed to serving the community. I joined the Sarnia Lions Club and served as its President in 1980 and 1981.

After retiring from my industrial career, I returned to school and earned credentials as a nutrition consultant, running coach, CAN-BIKE instructor, certified bicycle mechanic, Community Health Advisor, and Competitive Development NCCP Coach. I have also maintained certification as a Sales Professional through CPSA.

Athletic Accomplishments

Running and cycling have been important parts of my life. I have completed 28 marathons, 100 half marathons, and countless other races, including ultramarathons. My longest race was the 90 km Comrades Marathon in South Africa.

• I have completed the Abbott World Marathon Majors: Boston, New York, Chicago, London, Berlin, and Tokyo.

• I have cycled extensively around the world, including 1,200 km rides in France four times, as well as rides in Israel, England, and across the United States.

• My fitness age (according to Garmin ) is in the low 60s

Current Volunteer Work

Since 2010, I have been a member of the Sarnia-Lambton Golden K Kiwanis, where I volunteer to support children in Sarnia. I have served twice as Club President and spent three years as Lieutenant Governor for Southwestern Ontario Division 3, overseeing seven clubs. I also coach a new Kiwanis Club in Corunna. I serve as the District Advisor for Kiwanis Aktion Club in Eastern Canada, which supports Adults living with disabilities.

I have been Executive Director at the Lochiel Kiwanis Community Centre for the last six years (leaving on June 30th 2026). This is a City of Sarnia-owned building, which the Kiwanis look after for a Community Centre and rent out to not-for-profit organizations. In this capacity, I dealt with the City of Sarnia over these past six years.

I volunteer with the Red Cross, delivering Meals on Wheels and providing transportation support.

Family and Commitment to Sarnia

My wife, Nuala, and I have a blended family of seven children, nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. They are among the many reasons I want to help make Sarnia a prosperous city.
